The Creation of the Course

In 2014, while praying and seeking wisdom, a clear thought from God dropped into my heart: He was asking me to create a course to encourage others who were searching for answers just like I was. This led me on a transformative six-year journey of deep, personal study. Confused and uncertain about traditional doctrines, I followed His guidance, diving into hundreds of sermons, countless books and resources, and taking extensive notes. While my study was broad, it was rooted in the restorative views of the early church. The conclusions I reached led me to find a general home within these historic and Protestant traditions. This rigorous study ignited a newfound passion for God's Word and became the foundation for the course. As my knowledge grew, I organized my notes into a structured resource to encourage others to navigate the Bible and confidently explore Christianity. Over time, Pierre also deepened his faith and joined me in planning and creating the website, updating it as we grow and learn along the way. Since we began the course in 2019, we have hosted a home small group that is ongoing; it has served as the testing ground for this course, fostering years of wonderful conversations and deep community.

I have developed this course out of a deep love for God and His Word. It is my heartfelt belief that God wants us all united in Him, regardless of the background we belong to. My hope is that this course helps bridge gaps in understanding by looking to God as the source of all truth and love, fostering a spirit of unity and respect as we explore the beauty of the Christian faith together.

Pierre and I are happy to offer this FREE course to encourage others on their spiritual journey.

My name is Sarah, and I am the author of the course "Candid Conversations about Christianity." I live with my husband, Pierre, near Montreal, Quebec, Canada. We have been happily married for over 40 years and are blessed with three adult children and a growing family of grandchildren.

My Story

I grew up in a non-practicing Catholic home, and did not have much exposure to religion. I did believe in God, but I did not have a strong understanding in any religious teachings. After my first son was born, my journey as a stay-at-home mom sparked a renewed interest in faith, which led me to attend different Christian churches.

I began to question everything I had been taught. The truth was more important than anything, and I constantly prayed for God to reveal his truth. I soon realized that a popular or majority view isn't necessarily the true one. I began seeking solid evidence and stopped accepting a view just because it came from a scholar, as I saw even the scholars disagreed. I was left asking: as a layperson, who had the right interpretation? What is right or wrong according to God? Could I fundamentally trust the Bible?

Our Christian Beliefs

While the course itself explores multiple viewpoints without pushing a single personal agenda, several readers have naturally asked where we personally lean. For those who are curious, here is a snapshot of our current beliefs. Our faith journey is one of continuous growth and learning; therefore, these beliefs may evolve over time, and we will update this section accordingly. We are not currently associated with any specific church or denomination, and as a couple, we don't always share the exact same perspectives. We believe God has given everyone the free will to choose their own path without the need to impose those beliefs on anyone else. Below, we share our individual perspectives.

Sarah's Beliefs

  • The Nature of God: God's will and ways, as revealed in the Bible, are what's best for humanity. I see God as a loving Father who desires a genuine relationship with us, his children. I hold to the belief in one God, the Creator of all things, who exists as the Trinity: The Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. Together, they represent perfect love. Jesus came to Earth as both fully God and fully human. He was crucified, died, and resurrected, becoming the firstborn of a new creation with a new body—a promise that the righteous will also receive a new body at the final judgment and resurrection of the dead.

  • Spiritual Growth: Spiritual growth and a deeper connection with God happen when you are open and ready. The Holy Spirit will guide you on your spiritual journey, leading you toward conviction and repentance in its perfect timing.

  • The Bible: The authors of the Bible were inspired by God, and I consider it to be his Word. I believe that all books in the New Testament were written before 70 AD. Additionally, the book of Revelation is John’s expanded version of the warnings in Matthew 24 and Luke 21 and the final judgement.

  • Age of Creation: I hold to the young-earth theory, which places the age of the Earth at approximately 6 to 7 thousand years. This view is based on a literal reading of the word "day" in the creation account in Genesis along with added descriptors of evening and morning and the years that add up in the genealogy from Adam to Jesus.

  • Sin and Human Nature: We were created in God’s image, born with the same perfect nature as Adam and Eve. We sin due to our free will and imperfect understanding, not because we are born with a sinful nature. I believe that while sin entered the world after Adam and Eve's transgression, our human nature itself did not change. I also affirm the sanctity of life, believing that our life begins at conception and that we did not pre-exist.

  • Salvation and Atonement: While I affirm that Jesus is the Messiah and died for our sins, my understanding of atonement aligns more with the Christus Victor theory. Jesus’ death freed the Jews from the bondage of the rituals and curses of the Old Covenant and created a New Covenant for all humanity. This fulfills the ancient promise that the Messiah would be a blessing to every nation. This New Covenant empowers believers to turn away from sin and its consequences. Forgiveness is extended to all who genuinely repent and turn from sin. What matters most for eternal life is the condition of our heart—something only God can truly know. The passage in Romans 10:10 is key for me: "For with the heart one believes and is justified." It reassuringly suggests that salvation isn't about perfect knowledge or a checklist of rules, but about a sincere and open heart that seeks God and goodness. It's a complex topic I’m still exploring, but the idea that God judges based on our unseen inner life brings me great comfort. I also believe Jesus died to defeat the devil, remove the fear of death, fulfill prophecy, and reveal God and his love in a deeper way.

  • The End Times, Afterlife & Judgment: Some of Jesus' warnings about salvation at the "end times," particularly those in Matthew 24 and Luke 21, were directed at the Jewish people and believers in the face of the judgment and destruction of Jerusalem and its temple in 70 AD. I do not believe these specific warnings are a future event. I do hold to a separate, ultimate end of time when Jesus will return for a resurrection of all the dead and a final judgment on all humanity. Immediately after physical death, the spirits of the unrighteous go to a temporary place called hell, while the spirits of the righteous go to a temporary place called paradise/heaven. At the final return of Jesus, those whose names are written in the Book of Life will receive new bodies and continue into eternal life with God. Those who rejected God, along with Satan and all demons, will face a second and final death, bringing an end to death and all evil.

  • Gifts of the Spirit: The gifts of the Spirit, such as speaking in tongues, healing, miracles, and deliverance from demons, are still active today. I also affirm the reality of the spiritual world of angels, Satan, and demons as described in the New Testament.

  • Baptism: Baptism remains relevant for believers today as a personal and public dedication and witness of their faith. I also believe in the distinct baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  • Marriage: I believe that God created us male and female and that marriage is a sacred commitment between one man and one woman. We were created to complement one another emotionally, physically, and spiritually in a loving relationship with the blessing of children. Sexual intimacy is reserved for a man and a woman within the bounds of marriage. I believe that strong, loving, and stable families are the foundation for children to thrive and for society to flourish. I believe divorce shouldn't be taken lightly. It's a decision that calls for earnest prayer, guidance, and counseling.

Pierre's Beliefs

While I am in agreement with the core beliefs already shared by Sarah, I’ve arrived at a few additional thoughts that shape my own spiritual and intellectual journey:

  • The Age of Creation: I find myself stuck in a real dilemma when it comes to the age of the Earth and the universe. I can see the logic in reading the "days" in the Genesis creation story literally, which would point to a young Earth. At the same time, that doesn't line up with scientific tools like carbon dating, which suggest the Earth is billions of years old. I know that science isn't perfect and relies on certain assumptions, but it’s hard for me to believe those methods could be off by such a massive amount. Dealing with this gap between a literal reading of the Bible and the scientific evidence is an ongoing struggle for me.

  • Pre-existence: I’m also not sure where I stand on whether we pre-existed before we were born. I've come across many NDE (Near-Death Experience) stories that suggest we do, and because of that, I’m just not ready to commit to a firm answer either way.

  • Approach to Truth: My approach to truth is defined by a willingness to look at ideas outside of standard theological boxes. I’m comfortable exploring concepts—like the possibility of alien life or what we can learn from NDEs—even if they aren't clearly mentioned in the Bible or seem to clash with it. I see these as big, unanswered questions, and I’m perfectly fine with holding that tension without it shaking my faith.
