Do We Really Have a Spiritual Enemy?

I used to shy away from the topic of a spiritual enemy, fearing it was too dark or mysterious. Through my own journey, I learned that awareness is the first step to freedom. Explore the mechanics of how the enemy uses partial truths to create strongholds, and learn how to audit your thoughts with God’s Word.

We often feel like we are in a battle—within our own thoughts, our minds, and in our relationships with the people around us. Is this purely a fight against our own human nature, or is there something deeper going on that we aren't quite fully aware of?

The Reality Check: God’s Word Over Fear and Doubt

Jesus and his apostles spoke very openly about a spiritual enemy. In our modern world, it’s completely natural to wonder if this talk of a devil or demons is just ancient, symbolic language, or if it's something we should take literally. I've found that when we look at what Jesus actually said, His goal wasn't to scare us with eerie stories; He was giving us a practical heads-up about a spiritual danger. If He is our source of truth, trusting His warnings about this spiritual reality helps us find clarity in the scriptures and our struggles.

How do we recognize this influence and stand against it? Sermons in many churches don’t often speak on this topic, yet this truth plays an important part in our faith and daily struggles. Spiritual warfare is more about awareness and being equipped than being afraid of an overpowering, scary, mysterious enemy.

At first, I didn't want to think about a spiritual enemy. It felt too overwhelming and scary. But as I looked at the battle in my own thoughts, I had to ask: Is this just my own thoughts, or is there something more? I found that Jesus’s warnings about an enemy weren't meant to scare or confuse me, but to equip me.

The Mechanics of Deception: The Partial Truth

The enemy rarely uses an obvious, 100% lie because we would recognize it immediately. Instead, he hides a lie by blending it with a significant amount of truth. This "partial truth" is much more dangerous because it feels credible, yet it eventually leads you down the wrong path and away from full trust in God. Knowing God’s Word well helps you identify the subtle distortion disguised as the truth.

I didn't see it clearly at first, but looking back, I saw this happen in my own life during the season I spent caring for my mother as she battled ALS. The core truth was simple: God was right there with me, and He gave me the strength to survive. He was faithful and consistently brought the help I needed. But a subtle lie crept in alongside that truth: “I am essentially weak, I will never be strong and may not survive the next challenge, therefore I should fear future difficult trials.” That tiny shift in perspective changed everything. I moved from the truth—that I am strong because God is with me in all things including the future—to a belief of weakness, fear, and doubt. It turned a season of God’s faithfulness into a source of anxiety about the future. It took time for me to recognize this lie for what it was and reject it.

However, the biggest lie the enemy uses against you is to make you believe there is no spiritual enemy. The best tactic of an enemy is to make you think he does not exist so he can attack you without any resistance.

This often happens in occult practices like astrology, tarot card, or psychic readings where you are given positive readings or predictions for a while, but then a negative one is discretely inserted. This misinformation and distraction cause a separation from God; you stop looking to Him for wisdom and guidance and begin looking to dark forces that can plant seeds of paranoia instead of faith.

My Personal Journey: Breaking the Stronghold

In my youth, watching scary movies and getting involved in astrology and mediums brought fear and confusion to my heart. One particular astrology reading instilled a deep, underlying fear in my spirit: it predicted that I might die around the age of 50. I tried to shrug it off, but it was always there in the back of my mind. As I got closer to that age, it became persistent and unnerving. I am grateful that my journey in seeking God began before I reached that milestone. I learned about spiritual influences and how to "eject" them from my life.

When I reached fifty, I was able to cast out that lie and the stronghold of that deeply rooted pattern of thinking in my subconscious. I rejected it, replaced it with God’s truth and love. I learned that God warns against things like astrology and mediums in Deuteronomy 18:10-12. Following the example of the early believers in Acts 19:19, I got rid of all objects or books connected to the occult and embraced God’s truth instead.

Discernment: The Three Voices

Understanding that this realm exists helps us distinguish and discern the three voices we often hear:

  • The Voice of God: Encouraging, equipping, and life-giving.

  • The Voice of "Us": Our own thoughts, emotions, and logic.

  • The Voice of the Enemy: The source of fear, confusion, and frustration.

Jesus warns us about the enemy’s voice and equips us, so we do not need to fear. As his followers, we have been given authority and strength over all the power of the enemy through Him (Luke 10:19).

Your Arsenal: How to Stand

When you understand how the enemy works, it defuses the fear. I am no longer bound by those old predictions. I have been given a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind through the Holy Spirit. I’ve learned that I’m not fighting for a win; I’m leaning into the win Jesus already secured. For me, that looks like a daily “mental audit.” I have to be careful about what I feed my mind, because I’ve seen how quickly distorted truth can take root if I’m not paying attention.

The Key to Victory:

  • Fight FROM Victory: We no longer fight to earn a victory; we fight to defend the peace and strength that God has already provided for us. It’s the difference between trying to win a game and simply standing my ground to protect a home that already belongs to me.

  • Put on the Armor of God: The verses in Ephesians 6:10-18 are a spiritual gear toolkit. These aren't just ancient symbols; they are practical tools—like the "shield of faith" to protect my heart from doubt, and the "sword of the spirit" (God’s Word) to actively push back against lies. This is the gear I need to stand strong when I’m facing a spiritual enemy. Remember, prayer completes this gear; it’s your direct line to God for the strength to stand.

  • Guard Your Intake: Be careful what you feed yourself through books and articles, social media, movies, and television. You become what you focus on, just like your physical health also depends on what you eat.

  • Meditate on Truth: The Bible tells us to meditate on God’s word so there is no room for the enemy to build a stronghold in your mind.

Whether it’s a small, nagging temptation, a lie piggybacking on a truth in your mind, or a heavy sense of spiritual attack, we have been equipped with everything we need through the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. Even when you experience moments of fear or feel paralyzed by extreme anxiety, you have the power to act and reject that influence by standing on the truth and calling on the name of Jesus. However, it is also important to know that you don't always have to walk this path alone. Sometimes these forces can feel too heavy to handle on your own, and there is no shame in seeking external help. There are ministries and counselors specifically trained to help you navigate the process of breaking free from deeper oppression and reclaiming your peace.

★ Key Takeaways: Your Battle Plan

  • Awareness is Victory: The enemy’s power is in staying hidden. I’ve found that once I realized a lie often hitches a ride on a significant truth, it loses its grip. God’s Word acts as the filter that catches the distortion before it takes root.

  • Trust the Messenger: We can’t pick and choose which parts of Jesus’s message to believe. If He is our source of truth, we must trust His warnings about a spiritual reality documented from Genesis to the end.

  • Discern the Voice: Learn to identify the source. If a thought is persistent, fearful, or paranoid, it isn't from God. Use the "Three Voices" check to regain your perspective.

  • Defend the Win: You aren't fighting for victory; you are fighting from the victory Jesus already secured. Stand your ground through the Armor of God and prayer.

  • Audit & Replace: Guard your "mental intake" (media and influences) and replace every rejected lie with a specific truth. This prevents the enemy from rebuilding a stronghold in your mind.

  • Strength in Community: You are equipped by the Spirit, but you don't have to walk alone. Seeking external help or ministry for heavy burdens is a brave step toward reclaiming your peace.
