In our world today, we get hit by many faith-shaking events. Whether it is global chaos, intense political division, or deep personal hardships, just trying to "hold onto your faith" can feel utterly exhausting and overwhelming.

The Apostle Paul warns us in Ephesians 6:10-18 that we often end up fighting the wrong battle, reminding us that our struggle isn't actually a physical one: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood..." There is a spiritual enemy operating behind the scenes of our daily lives, fueling the chaos we see on the news and feel in our circumstances.

Thankfully, God hasn't left us defenseless. Paul gives us a vivid, practical blueprint of a spiritual armor that highlights how God has equipped us for these moments:

The Armor of God: Equipped to Stand, Battle, and Overcome

To stand strong, Paul tells us to put on the full spiritual armor of God, empowered through the Holy Spirit. Here is what each piece practically does for you:

  • The Belt of Truth: Guards you against deception. It anchors your mind in what God actually says, cutting through the biases and lies of the world.

  • The Breastplate of Righteousness: Guards your heart. It protects your emotions from the enemy’s constant arrows of guilt, shame, and unworthiness by reminding you to continue doing what is right and resting in the gift of right standing with God.

  • The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: Guards your stability. It gives you firm footing so that when the world around you is shaking with chaos, your inner peace remains completely unmovable. It also empowers you to keep preaching His word and good news.

  • The Shield of Faith: Guards your security. By actively trusting in God, you can block and extinguish the fiery attacks of fear, panic, and doubt about the future before they take root in your mind.

  • The Helmet of Salvation: Guards your thought life. It protects your mind by anchoring your perspective in your eternal security, keeping you from giving in to despair over the temporary troubles of this world.

  • The Sword of the Spirit (The Word of God): Your only offensive weapon. It empowers you to dismantle the lies and attacks of the enemy. Speak God's specific truth directly against them, just like Jesus did in the wilderness.

The Power Line of Prayer: Right after listing the armor, Paul reminds us to pray in the Spirit on all occasions. Think of prayer as the heavy-duty power line that keeps all your armor active and connected to God.

My Personal Shield of Faith

As I shared in an earlier post, my shield of faith is also a visual one. I visualize Jesus standing in front of me with His back to me and arms stretched out to his sides as my personal shield. I visualize Him standing between me and whatever situation I am facing, with Him taking the first hit so He can protect my heart and help me stand strong in my faith.

The Heroes of Faith: Trusting Without Seeing

When we put on the Armor of God to stand strong, we have to define what "victory" actually looks like. In our human nature, we want immediate results—we want the conflict to end, the trial to vanish, or our circumstances to turn around right now. But God often operates on a completely different timeline.

In Hebrews 11, often called the "Hall of Faith," we read about the great heroes of Scripture—like Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Joseph, Moses and more. They endured incredible trials and difficulties, but the writer of Hebrews reveals a profound truth in verse 39:

"These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised." — Hebrews 11:39

Think about that: these heroes chose to stand strong, yet they didn't always get to see the full results of their faith in their earthly lifetimes. They were planting seeds for a future and an eternity they wouldn't see until they crossed the finish line.

This is exactly why the daily battle for our peace is so intense. When we look at global chaos or personal hardships and don't see immediate answers, the enemy loves to emphasize that our faith is useless. If we judge our faith and God's faithfulness only by what is happening in front of our eyes, we will quickly become exhausted and discouraged.

To survive this tension, we have to move from a defensive stance to an active mental strategy. We have to learn how to actively manage the thoughts that enter our minds when the results we are praying for haven't shown up yet...

Taking Every Thought Captive

While the Armor of God provides your spiritual defense, you still have to actively manage what happens inside your mind. The fiery darts of doubt, fear, and lies will still come at you; the key is not letting them take root.

The Apostle Paul gives us a brilliant military strategy for our minds in 2 Corinthians 10:5:

"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."

Practically speaking, this means you need to become the "gatekeeper" of your own mind. You do not have to invite every random, toxic, or anxious thought that pops into your head and let it sit there.

When a thought enters your mind—whether it’s a wave of panic about world events, a bitter grudge against an enemy, or a feeling of despair—you have the spiritual authority to stop it at the gate. Intercept that thought, cross-examine it against the truth of Scripture, and if it doesn't align with the love and peace of Christ, evict it immediately. You are not a helpless bystander to your thoughts; through the Holy Spirit, you are in control.

As Scripture reminds us, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Equip yourself with Scriptures of God’s truth that speak to your heart to recite over yourself when you are hit with these thoughts.

In a previous post, we talked about how the battle is not about maintaining fairness, but about forgiveness, love, healing, and working towards a better future. Taking our thoughts captive is exactly how we pull that off. We cannot love our enemies or pray for them if we are letting thoughts of bitterness and retaliation set up camp in our minds.

Standing Your Ground for the Long Haul

Standing strong doesn't mean you will never feel the wind blow or stumble, and it doesn't mean the storm outside will instantly clear up. As the heroes of Hebrews 11 showed us, true faith is the quiet confidence that God is working out a beautiful, eternal plan, even when the immediate earthly results are invisible to us.

When you put on God's armor empowered by the Holy Spirit, and ruthlessly guard the gateway of your mind, you stop reacting to the chaos of the world. Instead, you become anchored in His unshakable peace.

★ Key Takeaways: How to Stand Strong

  • Identify the Real Enemy: Our battle is not against the human beings we see on the news or encounter in our daily conflicts. Recognizing the spiritual forces behind the scenes prevents us from wasting our energy fighting the wrong battles.

  • A Personal Defense: The Armor of God is a practical, protective shield for your daily life. Whether you are guarding your heart with righteousness, visualizing Jesus standing in front of you taking the first hit, or activating your connection to the Father through prayer, God has fully equipped you to withstand the fiery attacks of life.

  • Faith is Eternal: Biblical victory doesn't necessarily mean getting immediate, comfortable results. Like the heroes of Hebrews 11, standing strong means trusting God’s promises and planting seeds for an eternal future, even when we can't see the outcome yet.

  • Be the Gatekeeper of Your Mind: You have the spiritual authority under 2 Corinthians 10:5 to cross-examine your thoughts. If a thought brings panic, hatred, or despair, evict it, and replace it by reciting God's specific scriptural truths over your life.
